Why this site exists

This started as a project to help families find what their loved ones need. The more I dug, the more clever things I found that make getting older safer or more comfortable, and I wanted one place to put them.

It isn't an abstract subject for me either. I used to work at Highgate Senior Living. I'm CPR and First Aid certified and dementia-trained, and I still go back every week to play cards and visit. I won't claim everything here got used there, because it didn't. But those visits are in the back of my mind every time I judge whether something is simple enough.

How I choose

It has to pass all three:

• Does it solve a common problem for older adults?
• Is it sturdy, and simple enough to use without reading a manual?
• Would I feel good putting it in a family member's house?

I lean toward things that have been around a while and are widely owned, and I read what buyers say about whether they hold up. I prefer anything that asks for less grip, less balance, and less setup. Plenty of well-reviewed things don't make it, and a thin category stays thin rather than getting padded out.

What this isn't

This site is practical shopping help, not medical advice. For health questions, or before making a significant change, please talk with a doctor, pharmacist, or occupational therapist.

What else I work on

Tech help visits. I make house calls in Clark County for phones, tablets, TVs and computers, on weekday evenings and weekends.

Salve is a private app I make for keeping track of medications, vitals, and how you're feeling. I started it for someone I love. Because I make it, I'm not a neutral party about it.

I'm a founding member of the SoulSeen Network, a small group of independent professionals who help older adults at home with companionship, moving, meals, and outings. I'm the one you get for anything technology related, and I'm always glad to make an introduction.

And the things I use myself, which aren't chosen for older adults at all.
